Residents of Birnin Kebbi erupted in celebration after military men allegedly broke into the headquarters of Kaduna Electric Distribution Company, KAEDCO, which provides electricity to Kebbi state.

All the employees on duty at Dukku Barracks were allegedly attacked by the military after they turned off the electricity.

A clip which surfaced on social media shows the locals cheering the military officers as they drove off from the location after, reportedly, assaulting the PHCN officials.

A statement from the Distribution company’s spokeswoman, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, acknowledged the event that took place on April 29 on Saturday.

Before targeting its employees, KAEDCO claimed that the military had never complained to the corporation about its services or any alleged issues it may have had against it.

The statement read;“We condemn in strong terms the molestation of our staff by men of the Nigerian Army in Birnin Kebbi. The armed soldiers invaded our premises Saturday afternoon and unleashed mayhem on unsuspecting staff and customers.

The helpless victims were beaten and subjected to humiliating treatment by the marauding soldiers for no reasons. Such brazen act of impunity has no place in the civilised society we live in.

Their action is all the more nauseating considering the fact that the military men have never lodged any complaint regarding our services or over any perceived grievance they may have had. In fact, several attempts by our management team in Kebbi state requesting meetings where issues of interest to be discussed were rebuffed.

We wish to make clear that Kaduna Electric cannot guarantee its services in an unsafe environment. The safety and well being of our staff is a priority. We do not tolerate such intimidation and molestation of our staff and shall act appropriately within the law to seek redress”.
