Infertility is a major issue in many families in Nigeria. However, thanks to the developments in medicine with methods like surrogacy and in vitro fertilization (IVF), the dream and hope of many families have been rekindled.

Nigerian celebrities have also had their fair share of infertility with some being vulnerable enough to share their story.

Actress, Ufuoma Mcdermott may have shocked quite a few people in 2018 when she revealed that her son, Isio was conceived through In Vitro fertilization (IVF) a method of assisted reproduction technology.

The mother of two made the revelation in a bid to make a case for women who couldn’t conceive or give birth naturally.

  1. Nike Oshinowo

Ex-Miss Nigeria, Nike Oshinowo welcomed twins in 2013 after battling with infertility for years. The beauty queen who had battled endometriosis since she was 13 welcomed her children via an American surrogate mother at age 48.

Oshinowo was formerly married to Dr. Tunde Soneye but they both went their separate ways in 2013 after six years of marriage.

In December 2021, Ini Edo announced in an exclusive with blogger, Stella Dimoko that she had welcomed her first child via a surrogate. The actress who was 39 at the time became the second celebrity after Nike Oshinowo to welcome a child via surrogacy.

She admitted that she went through the process to fulfill her dreams of being a mother.

  1. Stephanie Coker

Media personality, Stephanie Coker also surprised many in March 2020 when she revealed that she had her child via IVF after three years of marriage. She made the revelation in a four-part docu-series titled ‘African and Pregnant’ that follows her pregnancy journey.

She revealed that she felt led to share her story to inspire other women who were battling infertility.

The latest celebrity to join this list is Yoruba actress, Biola Adebayo.

On April 11, 2023, the actress announced she had welcomed a baby boy via surrogacy after 3 previous failed attempts.
