Doing Things By Yourself Doesn’t Make You A Weirdo: It Sets You Free

When you see a person having lunch at a restaurant alone, you might feel sorry for them. DON’T. Chances are that they are having a great time as much as they would be if they were accompanied by a friend.

Indeed, there are a lot of people that aren’t afraid to do things by themselves, and I can proudly say that I am one of them.

Yup, I’m the woman you see at the movies alone. I’m the woman you see drinking coffee at a coffee shop on her own. I’m the woman you see dancing like no one is watching her at concerts alone.

Yes, I am the woman that’s doesn’t feel afraid or ashamed to do things alone. As a matter of fact, I enjoy doing things by myself.

You see, the older I get, the more I understand how liberating and empowering doing things on your own is. But, don’t get me wrong – I’m not trying to say that spending time with other people isn’t fun. But, it just surprises me that a lot of people perceive “doing things alone” as something scary. Something bad. It either means you are an unsociable person or a weirdo. Well, this social stigma is wrong on so many levels.

You know, I used to be someone who was ashamed to do things on my own too. For example, whenever I wanted to do something fun, let’s say, go to a concert or to the movies, I’d always ask my friends to accompany me. And, if they couldn’t or didn’t want to accompany me, then I’d simply forget about the idea and stay at home.

Oh, there are so many things I’ve truly missed out on since I was ashamed to do them alone.

But, now I’m a point in my life where I don’t give a damn about what others will think or say about me. I’ll no longer allow anyone, including  myself, to prevent me from doing everything my heart desires.

Trust me – doing things by yourself doesn’t make you a weirdo. It doesn’t make you unsociable and distant. It doesn’t make you a “loser.” Instead, it sets you free.

Enjoying doing things on your own shows that you’re independent. It shows that you don’t care about what other people think about you. It shows you’re determined to use every opportunity you come across to make your life more fulfilling and more interesting.

Since the truth is that not everyone will always want to do the things you want to do. Not everyone will share the same interests and likes with you. Not everyone will be willing to step out of their comfort zone, venture into the unknown, and gain new experiences.

Not everyone understands that doing things alone is liberating and empowering. It allows you to notice plenty of things about yourself and the world around you – things you’ve never been aware of. It allows you to gather your thoughts and get rid of all unnecessary distractions. It allows you to do stuff at your own pace.

Doing things alone helps you understand that you are independent and that you don’t need to depend on anyone. It helps you understand that you’re the only creator of your own happiness.

So, go out in the world on your own and enjoy everything it has to offer you. Visit the places you’ve always wanted to visit. Go attend that concert that none of your friends want to attend. Check things off your bucket list.

Do things on your own and never miss out on anything life has to offer you. That’s how you’ll create amazing, unforgettable memories.
