The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, announces the purpose behind the forthcoming strike scheduled to commence in seven days. The primary objective of the strike is to liberate Nigerians from the hardships caused by government policies. Ajaero reveals that the union is carefully analyzing the situation, considering the possibility that government policies may further exacerbate the already dire conditions faced by citizens.

In a television appearance on Channels TV, Ajaero emphasizes that the strike is not meant to worsen the situation but to rescue Nigerians. The NLC aims to compel the government to display empathy and adopt different approaches that will enable the citizens to cope with the current challenges.

The strike is a response to the removal of fuel subsidy, as declared by President Bola Tinubu in his May 29 inaugural address. The policy led to a swift surge in fuel prices from around N185 to N500, and up to N617 last week. The consequent rise in transportation costs and food prices has forced many citizens to resort to trekking long distances. Ajaero argues that the upcoming industrial action is necessary to alleviate the impact of the government’s policies on the general populace.

Ajaero points out the severe consequences of the policies on the people and the nation’s economic activity. He highlights the dire state of the nation, with the naira’s depreciation, economic stagnation, and scarcity of essential commodities like foodstuff. Transportation has also become challenging, compounding the hardships faced by citizens.

In a communiqué issued after its Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Tuesday, July 25, the NLC warns the Federal Government of the impending total and indefinite strike scheduled to begin on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, if necessary actions are not taken to address the grievances of the people. The NLC’s stance emphasizes the urgency of the situation and signals the union’s determination to protect the interests and well-being of Nigerians.
