Being Independent Is Much More Than Just Making Your Own Money

Being independent is one of the greatest blessings in life. To be able to pay your own bills, stack your fridge with groceries, pay rent, have a roof over your head, a warm bed and clean clothes is a sign that you’ve matured. A sign that you’ve finally made it in life. That you are strong enough to take care of yourself and live the life that you’ve always dreamt of.

But what bothers me a bit is that most people think that being independent is the definition of making your own money. I am sorry, but while that is partly true, I personally believe that there is much more to independency than your solid income and a stable job.

Independency is a feeling. It is about what goes on inside your mind. It is about having the absolute freedom to do whatever your heart desires. It is walking your own path no matter how difficult and challenging it sometimes us, because at the end of the day deep down you know that you would never replace that feeling for anything in the world. You know that no matter how impossible the journey seems, you can do it. And so you do it. You get up each day and you do whatever it takes to overcome the obstacles. You fight if you have to, but you never give up. Because there is nowhere you would rather be than right here, right now. And there is no one you would rather share your freedom than with yourself.

I know, it sounds strange when I put it that way. But that is what being independent feels like. At least to me.

Being an independent person means making your own decisions. Being completely free to choose how you live your life, how you spend your money, and which path in life you want to choose, career-wise. It is literally living the dream. Having your hands untied when it comes to everything that concerns you. This is what life is supposed to be like for every one of us. Unfortunately, not all of the people out there are as lucky.

Being an independent person means being able to be on your own without feeling lonely. I told you. It is just a feeling. It is not needing another person to fill the void in your life. It is not having a void at all. It is being whole on your own. Knowing that your happiness and everything you search for in life is in your power. In your hands. You just have to reach out and grab it. Simple as that. Being independent is much more than earning your own money. It has a lot to do with who you are as a person. Independent people are alone because they want to be, not because they can’t find a partner.

Being an independent person means being completely comfortable in your own skin. It means accepting and loving yourself with all of your flaws and imperfections and choosing to focus on your happiness, rather than pleasing everyone else around you. It is living life on your own terms, rather than changing yourself to live up to society’s expectations.

    It is being completely free.
