Why Do People Think I Should Be Unhappy Because I’m Single?

I’m single, yes, but I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I’m sick of dealing with people acting like my solo status is a terrible tragedy or an ailment that needs to be fixed. The idea that I’m actually happy being single and enjoying every second of it seems unbelievable to some people, but at the end of the day, I know what’s best for me. My reasons for being single are valid, and other people don’t have the right to say otherwise.

1. I’M NOT WASTING MY TIME. I’d rather spend time alone than waste time with dead-end relationships just so I’m not single. For me, being in an unhappy relationship is way worse than being on my own. My time is important, and I’m only going to spend it doing things that make me happy.

2. I’M HAVING FUN WITH MY FRIENDS. Since I’m not worried about dating anyone right now, I have more time to spend with my close friends. Having a relationship can seriously put a strain on your social life, or at the very least make it harder to juggle. Plus, there’s the fact that if my friends hate whoever I’m doing, he’s gone.

3. THERE’S NO RUSH. Last time I checked, there isn’t a contest to see which of my friends can get married first. Maybe in earlier generations there was more pressure to settle down by a certain age, but in today’s world, I’m in no hurry. I’d rather take my time and find the right person than go through a string of bad dates and shitty boyfriends. If I’m willing to be patient, the people in my life should be, too.

4. I ALREADY HAVE LOVE IN MY LIFE. I have my friends, my family, even my pets. My support system is solid and always there for me. Just because I don’t have romantic love doesn’t mean I’m alone. Even if I never find the right person, I’ll still be happy.

5. I’M NOT BITTER. There’s this misconception that happily single women are actually just bitter. They’re jaded after a bad breakup and disguise it with a carefree single attitude. Actually, no. I’m not bitter at all. There’s no reason for me to be. Just because I enjoy being single doesn’t mean it’s a rebellion against dating.

6. I’M LEARNING NEW THINGS. Being on my own is allowing me to discover new things about myself. It’s giving me room to breathe. I can take this time to really focus on what I need and want moving forward.

7. I’M STAYING TRUE TO MYSELF. I refuse to change what I’m doing because other people think they know what’s best for me. Obviously I listen to my friends’ and family’s opinions, but at the end of the day, it’s my own intuition I have to trust. And in this case, it’s saying that I’m happy exactly where I am.

8. I’M DOING WHAT’S BEST FOR ME Sometimes it’s good to be selfish. Learning to say no, putting yourself first, and being your #1 advocate are all great things to do. In this case, I’m putting my own needs ahead of what other people think. If other people think my happy single-hood is an issue, that’s on them.
