A devastating tragedy has befallen the Ugep community in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State. Last weekend, a family of six lost their lives in a horrific auto crash along the Bekwara-Abochiche road.

The victims of this heart-wrenching accident were identified as Mr. Edet Eteng, his wife Ikow, and four of their children. The four children were laid to rest on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, in Ugep, while the bodies of the husband and wife have been placed in a hospital mortuary in Ogoja LGA.

Reports indicate that the Eteng family resided in Abuja but had traveled to their village, Ugep, to celebrate the Leboku festival. Tragically, while en route back to Abuja, their car collided with an oncoming vehicle, leading to their untimely deaths.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the accident occurred when the Eteng family’s vehicle veered from its lane and collided head-on with the approaching vehicle.

This devastating incident has left other family members in shock, especially as Mr. Eteng had recently lost his elderly mother just days after celebrating her birthday. The Cross River Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), SC Istifanus Ibrahim, confirmed the accident. He stated that it took place near the Otokpuru area in Bekwarra Local Government Area, leaving two other occupants injured. The injured individuals were promptly taken to Abuochichie Cottage Hospital for treatment.

SC Istifanus Ibrahim highlighted that speeding was likely the cause of the fatal accident, urging road users to exercise caution, especially during the rainy season, when unpredictable conditions can lead to tragic outcomes. He emphasized the importance of responsible driving to prevent further tragedies.
