The Pain Of Losing A Parent Never Leaves: You Just Learn How To Live With It

Life is beautiful. But life is also very unpredictable. What you know can change in a second. The entire world that it took you a long time to build it and constantly maintain it can collapse in front of you in just a second. When you least expect it. Relationships can fall apart, people can change in ways you’ve never imagined, everything you once knew can seize to exist.

The saddest part is, you never know just how long you have with the people you love. Even they might not live to see another day. Even they might bid you farewell when you least expect it. Even they might pass away and leave you on your own.

What hurts the most is not being aware of the fragility of our lives. The truth is, we rarely realize how fortunate we really are in life. We rarely show the people we love just how much they mean to us. And then one day, when they suddenly leave… it becomes too late…

Here are 10 things that you will experience after losing your parents:

1. You will feel broken. The pain inside you will make you suffer for a long time. It will take away every hope and dream that you once had. It will crush you down and remind you how cruel life can be.

2.You won’t be able to move for a while. In fact, you won’t be able to do anything for quite some time. Not even talk to people or go out of your room. It will be as though someone had ripped a part of your heart.  Facing the loss of a parent will come unexpectedly and hit you in the worst possible way. In these moments, the most important thing you can do for yourself is to let yourself feel everything, no matter how painful it is.

3. Nothing you do will ever be the same. Celebrations, birthdays, holidays, lunches, nothing will ever make sense without them. For they will no longer be there to call you and remind you to pick up a bottle of red on your way. They will no longer be there to let you know that the dinner is all set and the food is ready.

4. You will realize that family is indeed everything. For the first time in your life, you will finally understand what it means to love and lose someone.

5. You won’t feel comfortable listening to other people complaining about their parents. It will drive you insane. Listening to other people how annoyed they are by their parents will make you want to confront them and let them know that they should at least be happy to have them…

6. In fact, you will envy them for having parents they can spend time with. Seeing them and hearing them talking about their parents will make you feel jealous. Jealous of all the time they get to spend with them. Jealous of their blessing. Jealous of their happiness. Jealous of them having their parents alive and well.

7. You will miss them more and more every day. You will feel as though someone had ripped you open and took your heart away. You will miss seeing them. You will miss talking to them. You will miss hearing their voice. Every little thing about them.

8. You will often get the urge to call them and talk to them. You will catch yourself dialing their number only to realize that there will no longer be someone on the other side of the line to pick up.

9. You will realize that the pain and sadness don’t really go away. You just learn to live with them. It will take you a lot of time, many sleepless nights, and a gallon of tears, but ultimately you will understand that you never really get over the loss of your parents. You just accept life as it is and you move on. On your own. Knowing that they will always watch you from above.

10. You will realize just how much you really love them. That is the most heartbreaking part about loss. You never really know what you have until you lose something. You only realize how much you loved someone when they are not in your life anymore. It’s sad really… But it is the truth…

If you are lucky enough to have both your parents beside you, know that you possess the greatest gift life can give. Make sure to let them know how much they really mean to you. Visit them, talk to them, listen to them, hug them, spend more and more time with them. Just be there for them. Appreciate the fact that you can still touch them, hear them and hug them… Cherish their presence. For you know how it goes…

Life is short. You never know what tomorrow might bring.
